Missional Thinker
I WAS ONCE PART OF AN ORGANIZATION NAMED JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT. THE ORGANIZATION’S GOAL WAS TO INTRODUCE INNER CITY STUDENTS TO FINANCIAL LITERACY. WHILE GOING TO SCHOOLS AND LECTURING STUDENTS TWICE A WEEK, A FIRE WAS LIT INSIDE OF ME. THESE STUDENTS NEEDED TO BE EDUCATED ON A GRANDER SCALE THAN THEY HAD EVER BEEN INTRODUCED TO.
I AM A MISSIONAL THINKER. MY MISSION AS AN EDUCATOR IS TO GET STUDENTS TO THINK ON A GRANDER SCALE. I BELIEVE THAT IF I CAN GET MY STUDENTS USE THEIR “IN SCHOOL” EDUCATION AND TRANSFER IT TO THEIR “OUTSIDE OR OUT OF SCHOOL” LIVES. I BELIEVE BY HELPING THEM TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, THE RESULTS WOULD HAVE A GENERATIONAL EFFECT IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND ULTIMATELY THEIR WORLD.
MY SHORT TERM GOAL IS TO SHOW STUDENTS THAT MATHEMATICS IS NOT A VILLAIN TO BE FEARED, BUT A TOOL THAT SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED AND UTILIZED, BECAUSE IT IS INTRINSIC IN THEIR WORLD. MY PLAN TO HAVE THE STUDENTS ENGAGE IN MULTIPLE SMALLER PBL ACTIVITIES IN ORDER FOR THEM TO GO BEYOND LEARNING AND PRACTICING MATHEMATICS. I WANT THEM TO ACTUALLY MANIPULATE IT, AND ULTIMATELY TO BE COMFORTABLE RECOGNIZING MATHEMATICS AND USING MATHEMATICS WITHOUT REALLY THINKING ABOUT IT. IN TO ACCOMPLISH THIS GOAL OF USING MORE PBL ACTIVITIES WITH FIDELITY, I KNOW I HAVE TO DO LOT MORE STUDYING ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF PBL’S.
MY LONG TERM GOAL IS TO HAVE MY CURRENT STUDENTS COME TO ME IN THE FUTURE AND TELL ME HOW THEY ARE MAJORING IN A STEM FIELD IN COLLEGE. I WANT THEM TO TELL ME HOW THEY HAVE TALKED TO THEIR PEERS, FAMILY, AND FRIENDS ABOUT MATHEMATICS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM.
I TRULY BELIEVE THIS WILL OCCUR IN THE FUTURE. I ALSO FEEL THAT ANY TRUE MISSIONAL THINKER IS PART VISIONARY AND PART DAYDREAMER.
